About the event
The Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, Newer Lawyers Committee, Presents:
No Judgment
A low-pressure opportunity to practice oral argument before District of Minnesota Federal Judges.
Featuring the Honorable Katherine M. Menendez and the Honorable Nancy E. Brasel.
Description: Newer lawyers in Minnesota are invited to attend the inaugural “No Judgment” continuing legal education (CLE) event hosted by the Newer Lawyers Committee of the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Participants will have the opportunity to present oral argument on a fictional (i.e. non-legal) debate to either Judge Katherine M. Menendez or Judge Nancy E. Brasel. For example, participants are invited to argue for a few minutes about whether pancakes or waffles are the superior breakfast food, whether Minneapolis or St. Paul are the more iconic Twin City, whether Taylor Swift is the best artist of the Century, or any other similarly light-hearted topic. The purpose of this event is to allow newer lawyers to have the opportunity to hone their oral argument skillset in a fun, low-pressure environment, and to receive helpful practice pointers from actual Judges on the Federal Bench. Both Judges will also present briefly and take questions on their experiences with effective (and ineffective) oral advocacy in their courtrooms.
Date/Time/Location: March 26th, 2:00pm-4:00pm; District of Minnesota Diana E. Murphy United States Courthouse (300 South Fourth Street, Minneapolis, MN 55415).
Eligibility and Cost: Any Minnesota lawyer that is in good standing and who is in their first ten years of practice is eligible to participate. However, the event is being strictly capped at twenty participants, who will be chosen at random from a lottery of registrants. The event will be $100 for attorneys in private practice and $50 for public interest and government attorneys.
How to Register for the Event Lottery: Fill out the linked form here by 5pm on March 8th. Registrants selected from the lottery will be notified via email to confirm their continued interest and participation on March 11th , at which time payment will be collected. Registrants on the waitlist will be notified if a slot opens up on March 15th.
CLE Information: Information on CLE credits will be provided to selected participants.
